Class overview Builders: Yantar Zavod, Kaliningrad Operators: Russian Navy Building: 1 General characteristics Class and type: Frigate Type: Project 1244,1 Displacement: 3,000 tonnes Length: 100 m (328 ft) The Novik class frigate, Project 1244,1, was a planned Russian multipurpose patrol ship class. The Project was the first attempt by the Russians since the collapse of the Soviet Union to construct a large surface warship.
The first ship, and only one in its class, was laid down in 26 July 1997 and was designed to perform patrol missions, search for and kill enemy submarines, escort naval ships, and defend coastlines. In the late 90s work on the ship stopped because of budget restraints. At this point the ship was only 5 percent complete. In the Russian 2000 defence budget the ship received more funding and the work on the ship continued.
In 2004 work again stopped and in 2005 the project was cancelled. Later it was announced the ship would be finished as the warfare training ship Borodino.
