Nordens Ark was opened in 1989 and is operated by the Nordens Ark Foundation (Swedish: Stiftelsen Nordens Ark). Nordens Ark is placed at the west coast of Sweden , not to far from the border to Norway. Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden, was appointed to Nordens Ark Supreme Protector in 1989.

Nordens ark history
Nordens Ark is powered by Nordens Ark foundation and this foundation is a charitable foundation. The foundation is the owner of Åby säteri. The foundation Stiftelsen Bohus Avelscentrum was founded on 8 March 1988 and Nordens Ark was inaugurated by Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden on 14 June 1989. Åby säteri was sold to the foundation in 1996 by Hushållningssällskapet. In 1997, the name of the foundation was changed to the current Stiftelsen Nordens Ark.
In 1996 Åby was sold to the foundation of Nordens Ark. And in 1999 Nordens Ark opened for the first time for visitors.
How Nordens Ark is operated
Nordens ark has a specific part called Lunden, this part is a private separated part the park. In this area there is quarantine for Predators and Birds. They have also an isolation part for the Ungulates and Fissiped’s. Mostly of the work with breeding take place here in Lunden. Nordens ark is open for visitors everyday from ten o’clock all year round and its about 100 000 visitors every year.
There are three categories when it comes to the breeding and rearing work at the park.
- Engendered old Nordic Breeds.
- Engendered Nordic wild Mammals, Birds, Amphibians, Reptiles and Insects.
- Engendered exotic wild Mammals, Birds, Amphibians, Reptiles and Insects that come from an environment similar to the Nordic. There are though exceptions when it comes to Amphibians and Reptiles.
Projects
Nordens ark has participated or is currently taking part in a number of re-population projects. With re-population projects it’s the purpose to release animals born at the facility into the wild, these animals have then been apart in the ongoing projects.
