He is a professor at the Technical University of Berlin.
Together with Friedrich Kittler, Bernhard Siegert, Georg Christoph Tholen and Wolfgang Coy, he is regarded as a pioneer of German media theory.
Bolz developed a media theory, the "Theorie der neuen Medien", that is influenced by Friedrich Nietzsche, Walter Benjamin and Marshall McLuhan.
