Nicholas Jardine FBA (born 4 September 1943) is a British natural historian, mycologist and historian of science. He is emeritus professor at the Department of History and Philosophy of Science (HPS) at the University of Cambridge.[1]
Jardine obtained his first degree and PhD as a student at King's College, Cambridge where he held a research fellowship between 1967 and 1975, but he has since 1975 been a Fellow of Darwin College, Cambridge. He specialises in the history and philosophy of the natural sciences, cosmology, astronomy, and historiography of the sciences.[2] He has written and co-authored books and articles on history and philosophy of science. He is also a noted reviewer and correspondent to philosophical journals and literary magazines. Jardine serves as a syndic on the board (Syndicate) of the Cambridge University Botanic Garden. Jardine was formerly married to the historian and philosopher Lisa Jardine.
Cabinet of Natural History and Fungus Hunt
Jardine was a leading member of the popular departmental "Cabinet of Natural History" discussion group. This continues to thrive and is organised by HPS staff and students and holds weekly seminars led by academic speakers in term time. He has often spoken at its meetings and regularly attends the annual Cabinet of Natural History Garden Party and the group's annual field trips to historic locations connected with the history of the natural sciences. For over twenty years, each autumn Jardine has led the annual HPS fungus hunt. This is usually held in early October, with participants foraging for mushrooms in the local area. Jardine tracks down and identifies the fungi aided by HPS staff and students.[3] In June 2010, the Department of HPS held an event celebrating "The Seven Ages of Nick Jardine" prior to his retirement.[4] In October, Jardine led the 22nd Fungus Hunt in Bradfield Woods near Bury St Edmunds.[5]
