Singapore Chinese Girls' School (Abbreviation: SCGS) is one of the oldest schools in Singapore with 109 years of history. It is a full school with both primary and secondary divisions, thus taking in students between the ages of 6 and 16. The secondary division was among the first schools in Singapore to be accorded the status of an independent school in 1989.

History

SCGS was founded in July 1899 by a group of Straits Chinese, including Dr Lim Boon Keng and Sir Song Ong Siang, at premises in Hill Street, with an English headmistress and 7 girls on the register. In 1923, the school left its premises at Hill Street (the site later became the Central Fire Station) and moved to Emerald Hill. There, the principal Miss Graham held an 'open house'for the school. (The Straits Budget Dec 21 1923, page 9 column 4). From 1905 to 1936, the school also admitted a handful of male students, but it afterward it reverted to being an all-girls school. In 1994, after 70 years at Emerald Hill, the school moved a newly-built campus at Dunearn Road.

Uniforms

The SCGS uniform consists of a sky-blue sundress; the school badge is pinned at the left breast. The uniform includes white shoes and socks. Shorts are sometimes worn underneath.

For the primary school, the Physical Education (P.E.) attire consists of a sleeveless white shirt (with the school logo and name in colours of the pupil's various houses of Red, Blue, Yellow, and Green), green shorts and a sky-blue half-skirt. For the secondary school, the P.E. attire is a white V-necked dry-fit shirt and green shorts and the same sky-blue half-skirt.

When the pupils are not having P.E. lessons, they must wear a sky-blue half-skirt unless they are in the lower primary division. The students have CCA T-shirts and class T-shirts, which are all designed by the students themselves.

Prefects in SCGS wear a white bolero and a badge. Students are nominated by other students of the same level and then, the teachers would pick from the nominations. This process is repeated every year.

Achievements

The school is well-known in the performing arts and recently, in 2005, received a gold streak for all performing arts items in the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF). SCGS is especially well-known for its dancers.

Academic-wise, the school is well known for its strong English/Literature department (whereby Literature is a compulsory subject in the upper Secondary division.)

The school's debate team has also had remarkable achievements, winning the Singapore Secondary School debate competition, coming in top over other schools like Raffles Institution and United World College.

The school has also made remarkable achievements for the Singapore Youth Festival 2007. The following CCAs: Band, Chinese Drama Society, Choir, Dance (International and Chinese), DRAMA, Handbells have achieved the Silver, Bronze, Gold, Gold with Honours, Gold, Gold with Honours and Gold with Honours Awards respectively.

They have also received numerous Sustained Achievement Awards in the past years.

In March 2008, the SCGS Dance group has achieved a number of awards at the Barcelona International Dance Compeition 2008.

One of the most outstanding achievements for a group of students from this school was in the field of Robotics. Having won the Championship in the FIRST Lego League Singapore, they went on, forming a team with Juying Primary School and River Vally High School, to compete in the FIRST Lego League World Festival in Atlanta, Georgia in mid-April 2008. This team, consisting of 10 pupils from the different schools and 2 youth mentors clinched the 1st place Champion's Award, becoming the first ever country outside of the US, in the 10 year history of FLL to earn top honours in this international competition. Being world Champions, they were featured in the Newpaper on the 25th of April, omy.sg (http://yzone.omy.sg/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=397&Itemid=57), lian he zao bao on the 1st of May and The Straits Times on the 9th of May.
