First published in March 2003, the magazine promotes socially, economically and environmentally sustainable practices in urban areas across the country and examines how and why cities are changing. Each issue covers topics such as planning, transportation, urban economies, housing, environmental issues, and housing.
Contents
History
The magazine was founded in late 2002 by Seth Brown and Adam Gordon, former roommates at Yale University, as The Next American City; its title was shortened in 2008. The first issue was distributed in Spring of 2003 and received favorable coverage in The New York Times,[1] The New Yorker, and The Baltimore Sun,[2] among others.
Beginning in 2008, then-editor and publisher Diana Lind expanded NAC's events series to incorporate an annual leadership summit called Next American Vanguard [3]and its new media conference Open Cities: New Media's Role in Shaping Urban Policy [4]. The magazine's exposure widened beyond urban policy circles, with coverage in Monocle"[5], PAPER Magazine and elsewhere.
