History

The team is affiliated with the new New York Cosmos team, which is currently lobbying to be a Major League Soccer expansion franchise in the near future and which claims lineage from the original New York Cosmos club which competed in the North American Soccer League in the 1970s and 1980s. The team also has a formal partnership with a youth academy, Cosmos Academy, which is affiliated with the Blau Weiss Gottschee club based in Queens, New York.[1]

The team was accepted into the USL Premier Development League (PDL) on May 4, 2011, and will officially join before the 2012 season.[2] In preparation for entry into the PDL, the Cosmos announced an exhibition schedule in June 2011, comprising eleven non-competitive friendly games against local PDL sides such as Jersey Express, the Long Island Rough Riders, Westchester Flames, Ocean City Nor'easters, and Reading United.[3]
