New Tricks' second series originally ran between 9 May and 27 June 2005, with a total of 8 episodes,[1] each lasting 60 minutes. The series was produced by Wall to Wall[2] and broadcast on BBC One,[3] it was first released on DVD, in the UK, on 24 April 2006.[4] Ratings of the series peaked at Episode 3, with 8.25 million, beating the highest rating of the previous season, 7.74 million.[5]

Cast

Series 2 features Amanda Redman as Detective Superintendent Sandra Pullman, Dennis Waterman as Gerry Standing, James Bolam as Jack Halford and Alun Armstrong as Brian Lane. Supporting characters include Brian's long-suffering wife Esther, played Susan Jameson and Deputy Assistant Commissioner Robert Strictland (Anthony Calf), a new character serving as a replacement for D.A.C. Donald Bevan, his first appearance is made in Episode 1 of the second series.[6] Also appearing for the first time is Brian's son, Mark, who makes his debut appearance in Episode 3. PC Clarke, who appeared in the pilot and first series, does not appear from series 2 onwards. In addition to the main cast members, there were several well-known guest stars attracted in series 2. These include Jenny Agutter, Keith Allen, Jane Asher and Honor Blackman.[7]

The UCOS team, at the request of their new boss Deputy Assistant Commissioner Robert Strickland, look into the death of David Barrie, a top barrister found dead in his car in 1980 after being bound and gagged. The original officer in charge, DCI Ronnie Ross, was well known for always getting his man, and this was one of the only cases where he didn't, although through closer analysis of his notes, a clear suspect is identified.[8][9]

The team re-investigate the 1997 attack of an Asian woman, Shivani Das, with the help of community liaison officer Sgt Pushkar Guha. Shivani was left in a coma after the attack, and is only kept alive by life support machines. The team discover a possible link with the disappearance of a private detective and conflict in Shivani's family is clear. The man originally convicted for the attack protests his innocence, but will the team uncover the truth?[10][11]

The team reopen the case of Hannah Taylor, who was kidnapped from her home in 1992, when it is discovered that the body, previously thought to be Hannah's, was identified as another kidnap victim. When Hannah is discovered, alive and married with a young daughter, Halford suspects that Hannah's mother, Madeline, faked the whole incident to get money from her ex-husband.[12][13]
