The city of New Haven, Connecticut is protected full-time by the 350 professional firefighters and paramedics of the City of New Haven Fire Department (NHFD). The NHFD operates out of ten fire stations, located throughout the city, and operates a front-line fire apparatus fleet of ten engines, four trucks, two squads, a Haz-Mat unit, a brush unit, a fireboat, and two emergency units (ambulances), operating from two battalions, the East Battalion and the West Battalion. One well-known characteristic of the NHFD is the fact that all of the city's fire apparatus have been painted white since the early 1940s.[citation needed] The NHFD responds to about 20,000 emergency calls annually. The NHFD also has had the most Line of Duty Deaths(LODD's) of any paid or volunteer fire department in Connecticut.[citation needed]
