It will mainly be used for ice hockey, and other indoor sports, as well as music concerts. The planned opening date is the fall of 2014 and will have a capacity of 18,500 spectators.[2] Once completed, the arena will replace Rexall Place as the home of the NHL's Edmonton Oilers.
The arena will cost $450 million. The city of Edmonton will pay $125 million, the Katz Group will contribute $100 million, and $125 million will come from a user-paid facility fee.[3] The remaining money could come from the Province or Federal agencies.[4]
On October 26, 2011, the Edmonton City Council approved to move forward with the arena deal by a vote of 10 to 3.[5][6]
