Nellaya is a village in Palakkad district in the state of Kerala, India.[1]
Demographics
As of 2001[update] India census, Nellaya had a population of 32056 with 15128 males and 16928 females.[1]This place was once famous for paddy cultivation so it got the name Nel aya. This place was believed to be the early settlement of the Cheras in Malabar. The Cheran Vana Uoor, corrupted to Shornur Nowadays, and Chera Pulla Cherry, presently known as Cherpulasserry are nearby places. This place was under the control of Nedungadi Samantha Rajas of Chera Kings. Nedungadi families are still seen there.The Zamorin of Calicut invaded Nedunganad and put it under the control of the second raja, the Eralpad Raja of Zamorin. The Eralpad Raj took over the place to get sufficient rice support for their workers and Army. Nellaya is the birth place of famous kathakali actors, poets, writers, doctors etc. The place is famous for aristocratic variyams, like Pilakat Variyam, Nellaya Variyam, Kanjirankat Variyam etc. Famous Kathakali Artist Athrambatta Kunjunni Kartha, Dr. Pulakkat Appu Variyar, Dr. Pulakkat Ramankutty Variyar, poet Pulakat Ravindran were belonging to this place..Kovilakams of ancient Nedunganattu Udaya Thekkumkoor & Vadakkumkoor Samantha Karthas are also seen here.
