Access and use Access requirements Open to anyone of 18 years or older Other information Director Osvaldo Avallone[1] Website http://www.bncrm.librari.beniculturali.it/ The Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Roma (Rome National Central Library), in Rome, is one of two national libraries of Italy, along with Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Firenze in Florence. The library's mission is to collect and preserve all the publications in Italy and the most important foreign works, especially those related to Italy,[2] and make them available to anyone.[3] The collection currently includes more than 7,000,000 printed volumes, 2,000 incunabula, 25,000 cinquecentine (16th century books), 8,000 manuscripts, 10,000 drawings, 20,000 maps, and 1,342,154 brochures.[4]
History
The Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Roma was inaugurated on 14 March 1876 inside the Collegio Romano, once site of the Jesuit's Bibliotheca Secreta, which set up the initial core of the new library. One century later the library moved to the today's location.[3] The current building was designed by architects Massimo Castellazzi, Tullio Dell'Anese and Annibale Vitellozzi and opened in January 1975.
