He is a two-time (2010, 2011) U.S. novice men's champion. By winning the novice gold medal at age 10 in 2010, Chen became the youngest national novice champion in the United States. His 2011 total winning score of 163.40 makes Chen the highest scoring novice champion in U.S. figure skating history.[1]

Career
Chen won consecutive national novice titles at the 2010[2] and 2011 U.S. Championships.[3]
For the 2011–12 season, Chen will move up to the junior level in national competitions but is not old enough to do so internationally. He is coached by Genia Chernyshova and also travels to Lake Arrowhead, California to work with jump specialist Rafael Arutunian.[4]
Personal life
Nathan Chen is the youngest of five siblings in his family. He began figure skating at about three years old. In addition to figure skating, he trains in ballet and gymnastics. He also enjoys playing the piano and competing in youth hockey. Chen has been enrolled in the Extended Learning Program (ELP)[5] of the Salt Lake City School District since kindergarten.
