The Nanxi River (楠溪江) is located in Yongjia County of the Zhejiang Province in eastern China, and is a major tributary of the Ou River. The Nanxi River Scenic Area (楠溪江景区) was named a National Tourist Scenic Spot by the State Council in 1988 due to its scenic landscape accompanied by its unique local culture.[1] It is 23 kilometres from Wenzhou, to the east of Yandang Mountains, to the north of Xianju County and to the west of Xiandu County. The Nanxi River is 150 kilometres long and it has a drainage are of 2429 square kilometres. It runs from north to south, and it first flows into Oujiang River and finally empties into East China Sea. The Nanxi River has 36 bends and 72 beaches. It runs from the main scenic spots of the Nanxi River area include the Baizhang Waterfall, the Furong Triangle Rock, the Waterfall of Tengxi Pool, the Twelve Peaks, the Taogong Cave, the Warehouse Under The Cliff, the Furong Ancient Hamlet and the Lion Rock.The rock stratum of the mountains is mostly made up of tuff, rhyolite, and granit.[2] The river is located in subtropical monsoon zone which is influenced by the maritime climate. The climate is warm and moisty all the year round. Its temperature varies from 4.2 degrees centigrade to 38.2 degrees centigrade. The average temperature is 18.2 degrees centigrade in a year.[3] Drifting in Nanxi River is the hottest activity. People can sit in a bamboo made catamaran which will drift very fast with the river waves. From the raft, people can have a view of the ancient village,remote foggy mountains and locals washing along the river. The locals transport wood from the forest through the river. People can float wood from the upper reach and their colleagues get them in the lower reach of the river.[4]
World Heritage Status
This area was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List on November 29, 2001 in the Mixed (Cultural & Natural) category.[5]
