It is located on Bains Road in Canning, Nova Scotia.
The school replaced the high schools of Kings County Academy and Cornwallis District High School.
NKEC's students more often than not come from the Canning, Kentville, and Centreville areas, after attending Kings County Academy, Aldershot Elementary School or Glooscap Elementary School. The school receives most of its competition from schools such as Horton High School, whose students come mainly from the New Minas, Wolfville, Hantsport and Port Williams area, as well Central Kings High School (CK), whose students come mainly from Coldbrook and Cambridge area. The schools are located in Greenwich and Cambridge, respectively.
In 2004 NKEC was ranked 55 in the 7th annual AIMS High School Report Card, with a final grade of C-[1]

Facilities
The school includes a large gymnasium, a cafeteria, small library and many classrooms. It has a stage that opens for viewing in the cafeteria or the gymnasium. Often, the cafeteria is referred to as a "cafetorium" during performances. The school itself also has a soccer field, outdoor basketball courts, and a rink (Glooscap Arena) all within walking distance of the campus.
Athletics
In athletics, the school offers badminton, basketball, cross country,football, hockey, ping-pong, track & field, cheer-leading,softball, volleyball, and soccer. The school has won provincial championships in badminton (multiple), girls and boys soccer (multiple), boys hockey (multiple), girls basketball, track, cross country, table tennis (multiple) and football.
Clubs
There are many extra-curricular opportunities available to students at Northeast Kings. Students can get involved with the improv club (who attend the Nova Scotia High School Drama Festival each year). The Ready, Set, Cook! team provides students with an opportunity to learn about food handling, cooking, and eventually they will compete in a culinary arts competition. NKEC's gay pride club is the first of its kind in Nova Scotia. NKEC's Youth in Action group organizes fundraising campaigns each year to help support worth global causes, including the building of a school in Sierra Leone.
Many other special interest activities are available to students including chess club, environmental club, winter carnival committee, dance committee, students' council, TADD (teens against drunk driving), yearbook, fitness club, citizenship committee and much more. Northeast Kings is lucky to have so many parents, teachers and community members who take on the roles of facilitators in many of these clubs and activities.
