Mylapra is a village in Pathanamthitta district in the Indian state of Kerala. It comes under the Mylapra Panchayath. Mylapra is a fast-developing town and business center. It is on the way to the famous Hindu pilgrim center of Sabarimala. The Main Eastern Highway (PunalurPathanamthittaMuvattupuzha Road/SH-08) pass through Mylapra[1]

Etymology

The word Mylapra is derived from the two malayalam words "Myle" (a peacock) and "Appuram" (the other side). It is believed that a hunter used a sword to kill a peacock but it so happened that the peacock escaped narrowly and fell on one side and the sword hit the other side. This was the birth of the names of two places, viz Mylapra and Vettipuram. "Myle (Peacock) Appuram (that side), Vett (Cut) ipuram (this side).The side where the peacock fell is named as Mylapra and the side where the sword fell is named as Vettipuram.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census, Mylapra had a population of 10241 with 4836 males and 5405 females.[1]

Culture Zone

Mylapra is famous for its schools, churches and temples. Mount Bethany EHSS, Sacred Heart HSS, N.M.L.P. School, Mylapra Government.L.P School etc. are the renowned schools in Mylapra. The Sacred Heart Catholic Church patrons the Mount Bethany EHSS and the SH Higher Secondary School of Mylapra. Also this church is famous for the replica of Pietà on the Punalur–Moovattupuzha road side. The church has a good architectural design and is a Forane church under the Malankara Catholic diocese of Pathanamthitta.[2] The St. George Orthodox church is located at pallipadi in mylapra, which is famous for the festivities conducted. Majority of the travellers on the Punalur Moovattupuzha road will put Offertory in the Kurishummmoodu of the Orthodox church. One of the biggest Brethren assemblies is also located in Mylapra. St.George Auditorium is one of the famous landmark building at this locality which is managing and owned by St.George Orthodox Church.There are many temples located at this place which symboled for love & mutual admiration too.

Mylapra is also famous for co-operative banks activities, one with its own name, The Mylapra Co-Operative bank.It has branches in Mylapra Town and Shanthinagar.Second One is Kumbazha North Service Co Operative Bank located in Mount Bethany Junction in Mylapra. Mar Philaxinose ITC (Govt Aprd)Governing by Malankara Orthodox Thumpamon Diocese and SNVUP School are other remarkable institutions located at Kumbazha North in Mylapra .
