- My Sergei: A Love Story

My Sergei: A Love Story, written by Ekaterina Gordeeva with Sports Illustrated writer E. M. Swift and published in 1996, recounts the story of one of figure skating's most recognized pair teams.
Sergei Grinkov and Ekaterina Gordeeva were paired together as young children in the Soviet Union after failing to prove themselves as strong solo skaters. Together they captured many titles, including two Olympic gold medals and four World Championships, as well as other professional titles. They eventually married and had a daughter, Daria. On November 20, 1995, during a practice session with Gordeeva in Lake Placid, 28-year-old Grinkov did not attempt a planned lift; instead he lowered himself to the ice. He had suffered a heart attack. Grinkov was pronounced dead at 12:28 p.m. Gordeeva and Grinkov had been paired together for thirteen years and married for four when Grinkov died.[1]
Gordeeva's account of their years together topped the New York Times Best Seller list[2] and includes many black and white and color photos from Gordeeva and Grinkov's personal collection as well as publicity photos from their various touring groups, such as Stars On Ice. A made-for-television movie version of My Sergei was also made. Starring the Russian skating duo Yelena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikhuralidze, it included interviews with family and friends, and archival skating footage.[3][4]
Following the book, Gordeeva also wrote A Letter for Daria, in which she tells Daria about her childhood in Russia and her hopes for Daria's future.
