This is the first hindi film of Priyadarshan. He chose Kilukkam, the biggest blockbuster of Malayalam films, which collected Rs.3 crores gross in 1991, to be remade for his Hindi debut. Bollywood expected a lot from Priyadarshan as he already delivered numerous hits in Malayalam and Tamil film industry. Unfortunately Muskurahat became the biggest commercial disaster for Priyadarshan at the box-office.
