Mufti Sayed Muhammd Amimul Ehasan Barkati (Ra) (Arabic: مفتى اعظم سيد محمد عميم الاحسان بركتى) better known as Mufti Amimul Ehasan was a renowned Islamic scholar. He is also recognized for his knowledge in fiqh, hadith, and tafsir. He has authored a large number of books in Arabic, Urdu. He has also prepared the time table of 5 waqt salat (Prayer time table) for Bangladesh. He has also served as grand mufti in Calcutta formerly known as West Bengal.

Biography

He was born in 24 January 1911 (22 Muharram, 1329 Hijri ) Monday at bihar state in Munger district a village named pachna in India. His father was Moulvi Sayed Muhammd hakim abdul manan and mother was Sayeda Sajeda. He was second among 4 brothers and 3 sisters.

Education

He acquired his primary Islamic knowledge of Islam from his paternal uncle Sayed Abdud Dayyan. Later on he gains the knowledge of tassuf from a renwed sufi scolar of India, Hazrat Sayed Shah Abu Barkat Ali shah. As he becomes a murid of him he add the word barkati with his name. Mufti Amimul Ehasan stated his academic learning from the reonwed Madrash Aliya at Calcutta in 1926. From there he completed his study on hadees and gets the title of Mumtazol muhadesin. For his brilliant result he achieved gold medal in 1933. After one year he gains the title of Mufti from his teacher Mawlānā Mufti Mustaq Ahmed kanpuri.

Working life

In 1934 Mufti Amimul Ehasan was appointed as Imam and teacher of Calcutta Nakhoda Masjid. After one year he also get the responsibility of Head Mufti of that madrasha's Darul Ifta. In 1943 he joined Calcutta Aliya Madrasah. After making of Pakistan in 14 August 1947 Calcutta Aliya Madrasah was shifted from India to East Pakistan (Present Bangladesh). Along from other teacher he also comes to Dhaka at 22 August 1947. In 1956 he gets promoted as the head Mawlānā of Dhaka Aliya Madrasah and he retired from that post in 1969. Among his glorified working life in 1964 he became the first khatib of the national Masjeed of Bangladesh, Baitul Mukarram. He lead the regular Juma prayer and Eid prayer at that National Masjeed. He was on that position till his death.

Making of Masjeed

When Mufti Amimul Ehasan arrived in Dhaka in 1947 he found many majseed are remains lonely and not a sound atmosphere for doing regular salah. This thing really hearts him. Every day he travel different parts of Dhaka and when he found any Masjeed with poor condition and no imam. He went their along with his students, pray a salah and then order someone eligible to conduct here regular prayer. By this he reestablishes many Masjeed in Dhaka. In one Masjeed he got deep interest and reestablishes that one. He named that Masjeed as Naksbandi Masjeed. But now that Masjeed is named by his name and known as Masjed e Mufti – Azam. He bought a house along that to live there at 14 no tanogange lane named Mufti manzil. Then he becomes first Khatib of that Masjeed. When he was appointed as Khatib of Baitul Mukkaram he made his younger brother Dr. Sayed Muhammad Nowman Barkati as Khatib. At present Mawlānā Sayed Muhammad Safwan nowmani, nephew of Mufti Amimul Ehasan and the youngest son Dr. Sayed Muhammad Nowman Barkati has got that responsibility.

Islamic work

Mufti Amimul Ehasan is well known all over the world by his notable writing in the different fields of Islam. He has been authored more than two hundreds Book. Mufti Amimul Ehasan wrote all of his book in Arabic or Urdu language. Some of them are also translated in Bangla language.

Personal life

Mufti Amimul Ehasan married Sayeda Maymuna, daughter of his mentor and a famous sufi saint Sayed Abu Muhammad Barkat Ali shah (ra). They along have a daughter name Sultana who passed away at little age. His first wife also passed away early. then he married another women named Sayeda Fatima and they have one boy named Sayed Munim and girl Sayeda Amina . Sayed Munim passed away at little age. His second wife also passed away in 1937. Then he married Sayeda kadija who was alive till his death. Among all the children of Mufti Amimul Ehasan, only her youngest daughter Sayeda Amina khatun was alived till his death and she paseed away in 1990. Mufti Amimul Ehasan performed hajj in 1954, 1958, 1971 three times in his life.

Death

During 1973-74 Mufti Amimul Ehasan health started to deteriorate. In the year 1974 the masjeed committees of baitul mukarram has some misunderstanding with him and behave roughly to him. It hearts him and decided to not go again baitul mukarram for further Juma prayer. He returns the key of his room and say I will not come next week. Before the next Friday arrives he left this world. In 1974 October 10, 10 Sawal 1395 hijri at midnight this Islamic icon breath his last breath. Next day 28 October his funreal prayer was held at Baitul Mukaaram national masjeed. The prayer conducted by his nephew and narinda peer sahib Hazrat nazre Imam Muhamad (ra). Then he was buried into his laid masjeed, Masjed e Mufti – Azam. In the entrance in his mazars gate there is a famous Persian poem has been written

هرگز نميں دانكه دل ازز نده شدبه عشق ثبت است برجريده عالم دوام ما

:Never say death to those whose heart is filled with love of Allah

They are alive and ever refreshed.

Men are mortal but he gains his immorality by his work. Just like the Islamic icon of 19th century Mufti Sayed Muhammd Amimul Ehasan Barkati.
