Mudra Institute of Communications (MICA)) is a Postgraduate school of Communications Management in Ahmedabad. Founded in 1991 by the Mudra foundation, it is popularly known as MICA. This ‘School of Ideas’ attracts students from various fields looking to study the area of Communications.

Contents

History

In 1991, MICA was set up as an autonomous Postgraduate institute by AG Krishnamurty. Its first program on media planning and a seminar, ‘Reaching your consumers in the 90's’, were organised in the same year. The year 1994 saw 42 students of the institute’s first Postgraduate Diploma in Communications batch graduate.

Campus

The campus is located on twenty acres of land in Shela village, about 15 kilometres from the city of Ahmedabad. The campus has a bare brick façade, and is surrounded by greenery on all sides.

Infrastructure

The campus is divided into four areas: the Main Academic Block, the New Academic Block, the Digital Communications Centre, and the Hostel Area (also housing the Community Centre). The Digital Communications Centre houses MICA’s community radio station Micavaani, the aMap lab, a publication centre, and an online studio.
All programmes at MICA are fully residential, and there are eight hostels catering to 350-odd students.

Facilities

The entire campus is internet-enabled via a hi-speed Wi-Fi and broadband connections. The seminar halls and classrooms have A/V recording systems and are fully air-conditioned.

Auditorium

MICA has two auditoriums, one an open air theatre capable of seating 220 members and another an air-conditioned hall which can host 400 people.

Library

The library, also known as the Knowledge Exchange and Information Centre, remains open for 24 hours except on Saturdays and Sundays.

Sports

MICA offers a range of sporting infrastructure for its students including courts for basketball, badminton, lawn tennis and table tennis. Apart from this, there is a cricket ground and pool and snooker tables.

Food

Apart from the student mess, there are two canteens on campus, one of which is open for 24 hours.

Community center & Gymnasium

The campus has an air-conditioned gym and a community center with a TV, Music and Cards Room.

Programs

Post Graduate Diploma in Management (Communications)

It is a 24-month fulltime course, including an 8-week summer internship. Students are selected based on their performance in MICAT (MICA Admission Test), group exercises, and personal interviews.

Executive Post Graduate Diploma in Management (Communications)

The Executive Postgraduate Programme in Communications Management (PGPCMX) is designed uniquely to suit the requirements of the industry, which needs qualified professionals at senior levels. The PGPCMX is a 15-month full-time residential programme approved by AICTE. The eligibility criteria for the course is a Bachelor's degree, of a minimum of three years, in any discipline from a recognised university in India or abroad (as approved by the AICTE or the Association of Indian Universities), and work experience of a minimum of five years in any relevant industry sector after graduation.

Crafting Creative Communications

Online Courses

MICA's Postgraduate Certificate Programme in Advertising Managements and Public Relations, and the Postgraduate Certificate Program in Research and Analytics are designed as one-year programmes, and include a campus visit.

Management Development Programmes

MICA offers Management Development Programmes (MDPs) in Communication Skills and Communication Management, which provide relevant training to the executives of different sectors of the economy, operating at different levels in the organisational hierarchy.

Admissions

MICA has an annual MICAT – the MICA Admission Test, based on which students are called for group exercises and personal interviews. Conducted at various venues across the country, the MICAT is designed to assess analytical and divergent thinking, written communication skills, and familiarity with the Indian ethos.

Student committees

  • MCSA: The MICA Council of Student Activities (MCSA) is the official student body of MICA and is the liaison between students and the administration. Their responsibilities range from taking sick students to the hospital to monitoring academic curriculum, getting funds allocated for student activities and addressing student grievances.
  • Sankalp: This is the theatre committee at MICA which is responsible for conducting the annual theatre festival, Sankalp. The committee was formed by theatre enthusiasts Sunil Vishnu and Karthik Kumar when they met as classmates at MICA in 1999. Apart from Sankalp, the committee organizes events such as Curtain Raiser, Rangmanch and Nautanki Night which are a prelude to Sankalp.
  • MICANVAS: Students of this committee organize MICANVAS, MICA’s annual brand-management festival where the best minds in the country meet for three days and face off in case study and business plan competitions, white paper presentations, quizzes, debates, and a host of other formal and informal events.
  • Alumni: This committee handles the relationship that the institute has with its alumni through organizing city meetups, conclaves, publishing the alumni magazine MICULT, and organizing the Grand Reunion on campus in Ahmedabad every year.
  • Culcomm: This committee ensures that all events and festivals of significance in Indian culture are celebrated on campus. It also organizes Oorja, a three-day intra-college cultural fest in the winter.
  • Interface: This is the media and PR wing of MICA. It handles all communication in relation to MICA that reaches its stakeholders. The committee members maintain and enhance contacts with the press and their core focus is to communicate accurate information to the media about ongoing events and activities at MICA.
  • Litcomm: This is the literary committee that is responsible for the publication of the student magazine Black Coffee and the annual yearbook. Apart from this, the committee organizes literary events on campus, such as the MICA Quizzing Championship (MQC).
  • MCR: MICA Communications Review is a biannual student-driven research publication initiative that this committee is responsible for. It deals with topics ranging across verticals which MICA has a focus on, including marketing, media, branding, advertising, and communications. The committee’s aim is to inculcate research writing skills among the students.
  • MICAMINDS: This faculty-guided student committee seeks to provide students with a hands-on learning experience through facilitating live industry projects. Since its inception in 2002, students have had the opportunity to work over 60 projects with clients including industry majors like Barista, Hero Honda, Yahoo and Leo Burnett.
  • MLS: MICA Lecture Series is a student committee that acts as an interface between the student community and industry experts. Over years MLS has invited a number of prominent speakers to campus for lectures which helped enhance student knowledge. MICA Lecture Series are an important part of MICA's curriculum as it helps students gain sharp insights which cannot be learned from textbooks.
  • MICANEWS: MICANEWS is a channel for MICA’s branding. It's MICA’s College newsletters published tri-annually, targeted towards the alumni, industry and stakeholders of MICA. It works in sync with other student committees and is jointly run by administration and students.
  • MICAVAANI: MICA's community radio transmits to the neighbouring villages with a radius of about 5 km around MICA. Everything from recording, production, post-production and marketing is done by MICANs themselves. The programs transmitted at MICAVAANI are Tamara Geet, Nanivaani, Tamara Des, Tamara Doctor, Tamara Cricket, Tamari Rasoi, Tamari Vaat, and Kahani Poori Filmy Hai. The walls of the studio have seen some of the finest talents and had MTv doing a cameo. MICAVAANI is truly the voice of MICA.
  • SCAM: The Sports Committee at MICA (SCAM) organizes all sporting events on campus, from the annual MICA Cricket League (MCL) to Coxic Smash, the intra-college badminton tournament. The committee also facilitates inter-college matches in sports and is responsible for the preparing the students to participating in inter Business School sports events.
