Admissions
It is a faith school for ages 11-16 in Richmond Hill. Catholic education after 16 is found at Notre Dame Catholic Sixth Form College (former Notre Dame Collegiate School, the other girls' direct grant grammar school in Leeds). It is situated just north of the A61, next to the derelict church of Mount St Mary which opened in 1857, closed in 1989 and has now been vandalised. It is not far from Quarry House.
Quotes
"This is a sound school which provides a broad and balanced education supported by clear Catholic values. The spiritual, moral, personal and academic development of pupils is well supported in a caring community."
"The school has a positive and powerful climate that reflects its commitment to high standards and a genuine concern for the well being of its pupils. It is based on the school's aims and the Christian values that are central to school life."
History
It was founded in 1853 by the Sisters Oblates of Mary Immaculate. It became a girls' direct grant grammar school in 1946, at the same time as St Michael's College. Leeds Grammar School was also direct grant. In 1978, both it and St Michael's College became comprehensive schools.
St Michael's College
This was a former boys' direct grant grammar school on St John's Road in the Hyde Park area of Leeds, the analogous school to the girls' Notre Dame Collegiate School. It later became a comprehensive school, St Michael's Catholic College. It was a Jesuit college which opened as Leeds Catholic College on 18 September 1905, becoming St Michael's College in 1933. It had the motto Quis et Deus. The building is now now empty.
Merger
Mount St Mary's announced a merger with St. Michael's College of St John's Road in Hyde Park.[1] St. Michael's College now no longer exists, as all remaining pupils transferred over to the Mount St. Mary's site.[2] They merged in 2005, with the St Michael's site closing in 2008.
