Daryl HolleyMorton Valence are a 5 piece London based rock band who self-describe their music as urban country.
They have recorded two albums, one of which was accompanied by a 110 page novella[1] and are noted as being one of the first ever bands to successfully enter into a crowd funding agreement with their fans.[2] Their single Chandelier was a BBC Radio 2 Record of the Week.[3]
Founded in 2005 by Robert "Hacker" Jessett (aka Hacker or Rob Hacker), Anne Gilpin and Leo Fernandez, the band won the 2006 Fopp/PRSF award for best new band [4] and went on to sign a record contract with Cheap Date Records. After the release of the single Sailors - that was quoted by the BBC as being "the best single you've never heard of the past decade"[5] - Morton Valence split from Cheap Date to form their own label; Bastard Recordings.[6]
Jessett had been an associate of Johny Brown of the Band of Holy Joy who he had written and collaborated with in the 1990s,[7] as well as writing and touring with the Alabama 3 (aka A3 in USA). [8] During this period he became acquainted with filmmaker Franny Armstrong who later introduced him to the idea of crowd funding which she had done successfully for her film The Age of Stupid in which Hacker makes a cameo singing appearance with a version of These Boots Are Made For Walkin'.[9]
They released a second album in 2011 entitled Me & Home James in which the band experiment with country music,[10] Morton Valence continue to play live and record.
