Originally described from Mexico, it was described as new to science in 1998 by mycologists Gastón Guzmán and Fidel Tapia.[1] Growing in disturbed soil or wood chips in landscaping, M. rufobrunnea ranges from Mexico through California and Oregon, USA.[2]
