MOP (www.mop.com) is the first well known and top influential simplified Chinese entertainment forum and communication website created in October 1997.[1] Individual users in mop.com are 28.685 million, ranking the 2nd of the most users website in the whole Chinese BBS network.(The 1st is Tianya.cn)[2] The website was called 猫扑大客栈(Mop Station)、猫扑大星球(Mop Planet), but then changed back to 猫扑 (Mop). Mop is the one of the origins of internet slangs and because of that, it earned the name of "One of the largest and most influential BBS and forum in China."[1]
History
Mop was created by Zhe Tian, whose nickname is called Mop. However he left the management department after several big changes about the website in 2002. Now the people who are in charge of Mop are 大熊、吾爱汝至、厕所之狼 etc.
Mop was originally created for TV games such as PS3 and Xbox, until someone in the forum posted a thread about computer games. From this, PC games started to be part of Mop along with TV games.
After that the forum received many suggestive feedbacks and gained more and more reputations. Many popular and technical threads were posted during that period, and created numerous internet slangs, such as BT(spirit of helping people selflessly)、YY(dream about things that will not happen)、874(slap in the face)、253(admire)、110(police)、Orz(a figure of a person kneeling down facing left) and etc.
December 28, 2005, Mop.com announced officially to merge with Donews.[3]
BT Spirit
What makes Mop a unique forum among others is the BT spirit. It means "Creative Ideas". It is the spirit that makes people to think out of the bounds, without limit, with humor and sharp thoughts. The term "BT" is not to be confused with the UK internet service provider British Telecom, or any other terms with that shorthand.
"Classic case for BT Spirit in Mop: One day user "yinrenytht" posted a thread about getting a new PC recently, using dual core CPU. "yinrenytht" wanted to test his new PC's graphics and functions so he installed the game "Need for Speed"(car racing game). "I was surprised after I played, the car speed was too fast! When I was on my old PC with single core, the fastest I could run was 300km/h but after replacing with my new PC I could run to 500 km/h with slightly tap on the gas." says "yinrenytht", and also described exaggeratedly that because the speed was too fast, his car in the game "crashed into the wall without notice." Since with the dual core, "yinrenytht" couldn't play the game "normally", he asked how can he lower the dual core to single core, and thus got a huge reply with BT spirit:
liyaSylphid: It's easy, just download some Trojan(virus) and it will slow your PC down.
jackyma936:Take out your CPU, draw a line in the middle, and carefully smash half of the CPU off with a hammer, then put it back into your PC. Trust me your car will run back to normal speed. That's how I fixed mine.
又可耻的匿了:Here's the correct solution: turn on your PC in the water, slow the running speed of your CPU by water resistance, adjust the speed of CPU you want by the change the position under water. According to my experience, use Wahaha Water(a band of water in China) can lead you to the best scale.
zhangchunfen0516:This happened because all operation systems Microsoft provide are Automatic Transmission(AT). These systems automatically accelerated and users connot control the running speed of software. To fix this huge bug, I set up a Manual Transmission(MT) on my new PC, from my old Audi. If you have a better car, you will get a better result. First of, you need to find your transmission, connected with a USB2.0 plug(from my broken hard disk) with the signal output. Plug the USB to your PC without any drives because Windows XP and 2000 and recognize it automatically. Now in my PC, I can change my number of cores by changing the gears.
嫣雪:Take off your fan and set a fire next to your PC, when the temperature raises the CPU will slow down automatically.
And etc...
All these replies are just jokes, but however these jokes are based on users' ability of imaginations. Thus BT spirit is also a state of mind that not everyone could reach, which made Mop a unique forum in China."[4]
