Mixed martial arts competition for children

Rules on Mixed martial arts competition for children vary. Currently, in most U.S. states, there is no central organization in charge of children competing in mixed martial arts (MMA).[1] In some states it is even a misdemeanor to hold these competitions. Missouri is currently the only state that has had officially recognized bouts for children.[2] To ensure the children’s safety in fights Missouri put slight but substantial differences into the rules.

Safety

Children competitor's generally wear more padding then Adult's in an effort to make the sport less brutal and decrease the chances of injuries. In Adult MMA the only visible protection is the open fingered gloves. Children must wear headgear, Shin guards, and the open fingered gloves. In addition to that children are not allowed to strike a downed opponent in the head.[3] The rule differences are in place to protect the children and yet still allow them to participate in the same venue as adults.

Injuries

Injuries in MMA are more common in Adult competition than in Children’s. This is because of the different and safer rules in place to protect them. The headgear helps prevent concussions and flash knockouts which could lead far more serious injuries later in life. However injues will happen as they do in all sports but they will be far less severe than in adults, thus making the sport safer and more fun to see, two of the three most dangerous sports for children to compete in (biking and skateboarding) do not involve contact.
