Sidney Mitchell was a fictional character on the New Zealand soap opera Shortland Street. He was portrayed by Andrew Grainger and appeared in a two episode arc where Kieran's past is addressed.

Storylines

2007

Since arriving in March 2007, Kieran's past was often questioned and appeared very mysterious. Both Claire Solomon and Meg Harris questioned Kieran on his father to which he appeared dismissive. He reveals to Meg he has not spoken to his father in two years.

After being released as a suspect for the Ferndale Stranglings, Kieran becomes in need for money and in a move of desperation, calls his father asking for money. After Joey moves in, Kieran is shocked to find his father arrive at El Rancho. Kieran tells his father to leave but it is clear that Joey has been won over by the polite and what seems nice man. It is revealed that Sidney stole Kieran's girlfriend and has plans to marry her later in the year, he invites Kieran. Kieran declines. Sidney continually suggests Kieran return to England for a fresh start, to which Kieran continues to decline.

Kieran suggests Sidney hand over his business which Sidney scoffs off. He then goes on to call Kieran a disappointment for turning to crime and asks him again to return to England. Kieran attacks his father and then starts to cry. Sidney writes him a cheque and apologizes, before disowning his son and leaving. Kieran later uses the money to buy The I.V.

Sidney is mentioned again in 2010 when Sean claims Sidney has suffered a heart attack and that is the reason Kieran is acting strangely when really it is his guilt over killing Morgan.

Sean Mitchell was a fictional character on the soap opera Shortland Street portrayed by Thijs Morris from late 2009 to early 2010 and a brief appearance in mid 2010. Sean was introduced as Kierans younger brother from England. Sean was only known as Sean to Kieran, Sophie, Libby and Jane Perry, while he was known as Sid to everyone else.

Storylines

2009–2010

Sean arrives to Shortland Street in November under the alias of Sid Mitchell (The Mitchells deceased brother whose name is attached to the IV bar) to a surprised Kieran and Sophie. Sean takes a shining to Morgan and the two have a brief flirtation until he spikes her drink, which her half sister Nicole drinks. Sean gives prostitutes at Kieran's brothel ecstasy but it is faulty and one is rushed to hospital. The police get involved and Sean frames innocent teenager Tupac Evans for the crime. Sean requests $20,000 from Kieran and after initial hesitation, Kieran pays Sean to leave his life.

Sean returns a few weeks later to his frustrated brother. He reveals he spent the money on a busload of cheap cars which he plans to rent out. Kieran becomes weary at Sean's apparently legit scheme. Sean later pitches an idea for a touring strip show and asks Kieran for more money. Kieran denies his offer and an angry Sean reveals he has already made bookings. On the night of the Christmas party, after an argument on the subject, Sean steals Kieran's car and races to the IV. He attempts to burn it down but Sophie stops him.

In January 2010, Sean learns of Morgans death and hearing that Rachel killed her, viciously attacks her car. Sean stands by his brother and supports his plan to marry Sophie. Kieran soon admits to Sean that he killed Morgan and Sean agrees to help him through the ordeal. In February 2010, Sean pitches to CEO Callum McKay his car renting business. Ben Goodall examines the cars and admits they are fine but Kieran discovers they are water damaged and Seans business is shut down. Sean hears that Libby Jeffries has a speed ticket possibly incriminating Kieran of Morgan's death, so he steals it.

Kieran backs out of the wedding the night before and Sean trys to talk him through. The next day the wedding takes place with Sean as best man. However Libby jumps in halfway through to announce Kieran killed Morgan with photo evidence. Sean takes the blame and both the Mitchell's are arrested for questioning.

The police believe it was Sean and he is arrested and charged. The next day Sean was released on parole. Sean stood up for Kieran against Libby and Gerald. Kieran thanks Sean and gives him money and a fake ID to escape to Thailand. Sean leaves in late February 2010.

It is later learnt that Sean started to use a prostitute named Jane Perry and he confided the secret of Morgan's death in her. In June 2010 it is revealed Sean is under the alias of Sven Mitchell.

On 30 July, Kieran is informed by the police Sean has died from a warehouse fire in Thailand. While grieving, Kieran is kidnapped by a Thai gang and it is revealed Sean is very much alive and was kidnapped also. They torture Sean in front of Kieran to make him admit to stealing their money. The two brothers escape however and Sean takes Kieran to the IV. Kieran is once again kidnapped and Sean steals Nicole's car with Nicole in the passengers seat. The two along with Gerald pursue Kieran and his kidnappers and eventually, after a rescue mission, they end up in a forest with an injured Kieran.

Kieran regains consciousness and fights gang leader, White Dragon on a cliff edge. As White Dragon is about to kill Kieran, Sean tackles them and himself off a cliff. White Dragon falls for his death while Gerald holds onto Kieran and Sean. The three start to fall and Kieran admits to killing Morgan before sacrificing himself to save Sean.

Sean is rescued by Gerald and last seen recovering in ED. He is forgiven by the staff for thinking he killed Morgan and he is arrested for fraud. It is likely he was deported.
