Cà Mau, VietnamAlma mater University of California, Davis (B.A.)
University of California, Berkeley School of Law (J.D.)Miranda M. Du (born 1969) is an attorney in Reno, Nevada and a current federal judicial nominee for the United States District Court for the District of Nevada.
Early life and education
Born in Cà Mau, Vietnam, Du left the country at age 9, when her family sought asylum in Malaysia.[1] They spent a year in Malaysian refugee camps before ultimately being granted asylum in the United States.[1]
Du received a Bachelor of Arts from University of California, Davis in 1991 and a Juris Doctor from University of California, Berkeley School of Law in 1994.[2]
Judicial nomination
On August 2, 2011, President Barack Obama nominated Du to fill a judicial vacancy on to the United States District Court for the District of Nevada.[2]
On November 3, 2011, the Senate Judiciary Committee narrowly reported her nomination to the Senate floor in a party-line, 10–8 vote.[3] The reasons cited by some of the eight Republican senators on the committee who voted against sending Du's nomination to the Senate floor were her lack of experience and a 2008 sanction against Du by the very court to which she is nominated.[4] The sanction related to Du's representation of a water district in a 2006 worker grievance case and the fact taht she either failed to recognize or did not adequately pursue the argument that the federal court had lacked jurisdiction in the case.[5]
Du's nomination currently awaits a full Senate vote. In a statement, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who as a Nevadan recommended Du to Obama, said he is planning a "swift confirmation" of Du.[6][7]
