Refereeing career
Jones was promoted to the Football League list of referees in 1997, his first match in charge being Mansfield Town against Hull City on 9 August of that year.
His first games at Wembley Stadium were also in 2007; the League 2 play-off final between Bristol Rovers and Shrewsbury Town, and the FA Trophy final contested by Stevenage Borough and York City.
In 2008 he became a Select Group referee, allowing him to officiate games in the Premier League. His first match in England's top league was Hull City versus Wigan Athletic on 30 August of that year.
