Lee attended Liverpool Institute of Higher Education between 1990-1993 where he gained his degree. Whilst there he played for his college football team as well as being a regular compere, hosting a variety of social events at the Student Union club, The Derwent. Lee is an old boy of the exclusive Newman Hall.
Career
He took up the whistle in 1988, officiating in the "Bolton Boys Fed". In 1992 he was added to the
North West Counties Football League assistant referee s' list, and progressed to full referee for that competition four years later. He was included onthe Football League list of assistant referees in 1998, and fulfulled that role once more in thePremier League from 2000.In 2002, he was promoted to referee for the Football League, and his first match at that level was the
Football League Third Division encounter atGay Meadow between Shrewsbury and Exeter onAugust 10 2002 , the match finishing 1-0 to the home side. FA County Youth Cup Final between Birmingham and Durham, which Birmingham won 2-1.
