Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union -- is headquartered in Charter Clinton Township, Michigan, and has a membership size of more than 65,000 and assets of over $1.052 billion dollars as of March 31, 2011.[2] MSGCU is a not-for-profit financial institution, which is owned and operated by its members. The credit union is regulated under the authority of the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), which means its members' deposits are federally insured up to $250,000.[3] Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union currently has nine branches located throughout Macomb and Oakland Counties.[4] It also belongs to the CO-OP Network of ATMs and Credit Union Service Centers. This network allows members to utilize more than 28,000 ATM locations and 4,100 Service Centers nationwide.[5]

Membership

The following individuals and groups are eligible for Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union membership:

  • Employees, students, former students, alumni, and retirees of educational institutions in the Michigan counties of Genesee, Lapeer, Livingston, Macomb, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw, and Wayne. This includes anyone that went to school in any of these counties or is related to someone that does/did.
  • Elected officials, appointed officials, employees, and retirees of any department or agency of the federal government of any state, county, or local government or political subdivision thereof located within the Michigan counties of Genesee, Lapeer, Livingston, Macomb, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw, and Wayne.
  • Employees or members of employer groups or other organized groups or businesses that are located within 25 miles of any Credit Union office.
  • Any person over age 55 who receives a retirement annuity, pension, social security, or similar retirement payment from private or government sources, and lives in, or belongs to a retirement organization located in Genesee, Lapeer, Livingston, Macomb, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw, or Wayne Counties.
  • A spouse of a deceased member if accepted into membership prior to remarriage.
  • Members of MSGCU who attained membership through other eligibility requirements in place prior to 8/1/2006 will retain their membership.
  • Relatives by blood or marriage of any of the above. Relatives are eligible to join even if above individuals are not members.

Awards

The youth savings programs offered at MSGCU have received the Michigan Credit Union League's (MCUL) Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award numerous times. In the past, the MCUL has also awarded the credit union with the Louise Herring Award and Dora Maxwell Award for various member and community service efforts.[6] Most recently, MSGCU was awarded with the second place Louise Herring Award for their free educational seminar program.

Bauer Financial[7] , which provides independent bank and credit union star-ratings, has awarded MSGCU with its highest, five-star rating for financial institutions for more than 20 years. MSGCU also boasts high member satisfaction and retention. In 2010, MSGCU received a 98% member satisfaction rating during an independent survey performed by D. Hilton Associates Inc. Also in 2010, Raddon Financial Group ranked MSGCU’s member retention rate at 99.5%.[8]
