History
The idea of a Mexican Talent show was decided by the CEOs of Canal de las Estrellas after seeing the success of other talent shows such as; Britain's Got Talent and shows such as American Idol and The X Factor. Canal de las Estrellas announced it would host a new type of talent show in Mexico to show that ‘Mexico has talent!’ which is the slogan used for the program. Canal de las Estrellas confirmed the judging panel on the 4th of January, Vivian Gray would have been on the panel but decided it wasn’t for her and the place was given to Lorena Herrera. The “Got Talent” format has been adopted by many other countries, but the Mexico’s Got Talent is only aired in Mexico as the producers have not sorted out the rights after interest by American Broadcaster ABC to air the semi and the final.[2]
Format
The auditions take place at a performance hall in different cities in Mexico. At any time during the audition the judges may show disapproval to the act by pressing a buzzer and this lights a big red light on the stage. If all the judges press their buzzers, the act must end. To advance to the second round, auditionees must get at least 2 ‘yes’ votes or they will be sent home and their dreams of performing will be over. After the auditions, the judges have to narrow almost 200 successful acts down to just 30. All of the performers are called back to find out if they have progressed to the live semi-finals. The semi-final and final shows are broadcast live from The St. Regis Mexico City with a number of semi-finals, followed by the one live final. The remaining acts perform a number of semi-finals, with the two most popular acts from each semi-finals winning a position in the final. Unlike the American version, judges may still end a performance early with the 3 lights, “3 lights of death” as it has been called by people. The judges are asked to express their views on each act's performance. After all acts have performed, phone lines open, while the public vote for the act they think were the best. When the votes have been counted, the act that has had the highest number of public votes is automatically placed in the final. The show uses the secondary theme tune “Lux Aeterna” which is also used in Britain's Got Talent’s secondary theme tune to create tension and effect.
New Series
Because of the outstanding success of other 'Got Talent' shows, it was announced earlier in the week that Canal de las Estrellas will be doing a new series with auditions starting in the New Year. The panel has not yet been decided but has been rumoured to contain actress Salma Hayek but the board of the show are not releasing any press information until January 2010.
All that has been said is that Mexico’s Got Talent has create a new opening that features the tune, North by Paul Mounsey, most commonly seen on the 'Visit Scotland' adverts. [3] TV news, first for tv.
