Megaplex Theatres was founded in 1999 by the former owner of the Utah Jazz, Larry H. Miller. It is an independent movie theater chain in the state of Utah, with five locations along the Wasatch front and another set to open in October 2011.[dated info] The theater chain is now operated by Greg Miller, CEO of the Larry H. Miller Group of companies, who is the oldest son of the late Larry H. Miller.

Theatres
Megaplex Theatres currently has five locations within Utah, with one currently under construction and another (Thanksgiving point) currently expanding to 17 screens.
Megaplex 17 at Jordan Commons
Megaplex 17 was opened November 1, 1999 in the Jordan Commons in Sandy, Utah. It was built on the former site of Jordan High School, and the lobby was built to look like Downtown Salt Lake City circa 1870. It houses the Spring Mobile IMAX screen. In 2002, it was the highest grossing theater for the opening weekend of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Less than a year later, their theater sold over 120,000 tickets for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl during its run from July to late November, making this theater the top-grossing movie theater in the world for this film.
Megaplex 12 at The Gateway
Megaplex 12 at the Gateway was opened November 2, 2001. Starting in the fall 2010 the "ATK IMAX" screen is now operated on weekends by the megaplex 12 staff to show feature IMAX films.
Megaplex 8 at Thanksgiving Point
Megaplex 8 at Thanksgiving Point in Lehi, Utah was acquired by Megaplex Theatres in early 2005 when LCA Entertainment filed for bankruptcy. It was temporally closed for renovations then opened up as Megaplex 8 at Thanksgiving Point a few weeks later. Megaplex 8 also rents out the Museum of Ancient Life's Mammoth Screen at night time to show blockbuster movies. The CEO announced in late Sept 2010 that they will be expanding this Megaplex location to 17 screens.
Megaplex 20 at The District
Megaplex 20 at the District in South Jordan, Utah is Megaplex's biggest theatre. It opened May 15, 2006, and since has broken box office midnight records for several movies. Megaplex 20 was one of the highest grossing box office's for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. The theater currently has D-BOX seats as of May 28, 2010. Megaplex 20 added and completed a digital IMAX screen in late 2010 located in its largest auditorium #11.
Megaplex 13 at The Junction
Megaplex 13 at the Junction shopping district in Ogden, Utah, designed by FFKR Architects, was opened June 15, 2007. It was part of Ogden's effort to clean up downtown, and was built on the former site of Ogden City Mall.
Megaplex 14 at Legacy Crossing
Megaplex 14 at Legacy Crossing is a planned theatre in Centerville, Utah. It will hold 14 theaters including a digital 2D and 3D IMAX screen. Groundbreaking Ceremony was held on September 23, 2010. The theater is scheduled to open in October 2011.
