Medawachchiya is a town in the Anuradhapura District, North Central Province of Sri Lanka. Situated 27km from Anuradhapura, on the A9 Jaffna - Kandy main road, it is 229km from the capital Colombo. Medawachchiya is also the point from which the A14 main road to mannar and Talaimannar starts. It is also a main railway station and a railway junction of the Colombo - Jaffna - Kankasanturai railway line of the Sri Lanka Government Railway. The now abandoned railway line to Talaimannar (also known as Indo-Lanka railway) used to deviate from this junction. The track has been abandoned due to terrorist activities of the Tamil Tigers which was active in the area from 1983 till May 2008 when the area was completely liberated by the Sri Lanka Army. Home to a Divisional Secretary of the government and many other government and commercial institutions, Medawachchiya is fast growing town on the main supply route to Northern Sri Lanka.
It is the main center of northern part of Sri Lanka. From Medawachchiya, there are four main roads to four directions. First as Jaffna, Kandy, Mannar and Trincomale. It is very suitable to develop as commercial center. The climate also as good as to better commercial activities.
