Early life
Maya Ford, was born on January 8, 1979 in Oakland, California, on the same day as her fellow band member Torry Castellano. She met future bandmates Castellano and Allison Robertson in 5th grade. Ford started to play the bass guitar at age 13. Initially she was playing guitar (she received an acoustic guitar from her cousin), but then she decided to switch to the bass, because she could not handle the chords.[2] As of May 1993, when her band (then known as Screen) started, she had approximately 6 months of playing experience.
Trivia
- Maya almost exclusively plays the Gibson Thunderbird bass (most notably a Nikki Sixx Blackbird or a 1980s creme colored model) since the mid-90s. Except for the Gold Medal recording sessions/tour, where she mainly played a 1960s Epiphone Newport bass. Occasionly she also uses a Gibson SG bass.[3]
- Her first musical instrument was the recorder.[2]
- Her favourite album is After the Rain by Nelson.[4]
