Max Vernon (born May 24, 1988) is a performer, visual artist, and songwriter from Los Angeles, California, currently living and performing in New York City, where he attended New York University. Best known for his prolific lyrics and piano compositions, he has garnered a substantial following in response to the media he has posted online, mainly through file sharing [1] and various videos of original compositions and covers.[2]
Music
Max Vernon first started performing in 2006 at The Sidewalk Cafe, soon becoming a regular. Since then he has been featured at the yearly Antifolk Festival and performed at various venues in the city, including Ars Nova [3] and most recently, Joe's Pub with fellow Antifolk musician, Dan Fishback.[4] In 2008, two of his covers (Ace of Base and Katy Perry) made Coverville's top 5 best covers of the year,[5] one of which was later featured in New York Magazine[6] and used on the Guilt By Association Vol. 2 compilation, alongside artists such as Kaki King, Matt Pond PA, My Brightest Diamond, and Frightened Rabbit.[7]
His cover of The Smiths' "Headmaster Ritual" was featured on The Music Slut's compilation, "TMS Hearts Moz".[8] Various publications including W magazine and New York Post have featured his music.[9][10] On his own, he has recorded two collections of originals - "Manic Impression" released in 2009 at CMJ, and "Silent Sirens" in 2010.
Max Vernon was recently interviewed by Cole Escola of Jeffery & Cole Casserole for downtown blog East Village Boys [11] He later went on to have a cameo appearance in the first episode of Casserole season 2, "The Jobs"[12][13]
He is currently the lead singer and co-writer for the band, Decades.[14]
Visual art
In addition to his musical abilities, he is an innovative visual artist that most frequently uses his aesthetic sense for sketching and painting,[15] as well as to create his own stage costumes, for which he has been publicly spotlighted on numerous occasions.[16][17]
