Maulana Hassan Jan Madani (Urdu:مولانا حسن جان مدنی ) was a Pakistani Islamic scholar. He was born on 6 January 1938 in Prang, Charsadda. He was Shaikhul-Hadith at Darwesh Masjid in Peshawar and used to deliver Friday sermons in the same mosque. He was also the vice president of Wifaqul-Madaras, the largest board of Islamic universities (Jamiat).

Education

Maulana completed remorization (Hifz) of the holy Quran at the age of seven. He studied basic mathematics and Arabic grammar from his uncle. He later got admission at Anjuman Taleem-ul-Quran where he learnt basic Urdu and Islamiat. He then moved to Darul-uloom Utmanzai where he completed Dars-e-Nizami. After Dars-e-Nizami, he moved to Jamia Ashrafia Lahore, where he studied Hadith books from Hafiz Muhammad Idrees and Maulana Muhammad Rasool Khan Hazarvi. He got degree of Fazal-e-Deniat from Jamia Islamia Akora Khattak with distinction. On 11 June 1962 he moved to Madina for further studies at The Islamic University of al-Madinah al-Munawarah. He was awarded gold medal by the University of Peshawar in MA Islamiat for his distinction.

Friday Sermon

Maulana Hassan Jan used to deliver Friday sermon in Darwesh Mosque and people from all over Peshawar used to attend. For about 40 minutes he used to deliver the sermon and for about half an hour he would answer questions of the audience. His sermon used to be in Pashto and in soft tone. He was gifted with presenting and explaining Islam in simple manner. He also had a good sense of humor and his sermon would never get boring. Most of his speeches have been recorded and are available on audio cassettes and CDs.[1]

Politics

Maulana was not a politician however he supported JUI. He contested the 1990 elections and defeated the then Awami National Party leader Abdul Wali Khan in his stronghold. He served as MNA for some time but soon he realized that this position was disturbing his educational and teaching activities so he resigned to devote himself to teaching at Darwesh Mosque.

Assassination

On Saturday 17 September 2007 some unknown people came to him near Aftari time and requested him to go with them for Nikah-Khwani. Near Wazir Bagh in the suburbs of Peshawar, they shot him.[1]
