Maulana Hifzur Rehman (d. 1970) was a Pakistani Archaeologist, Historian and Linguist.

Biography

Maulana Hifzur Rehman SI (late) ranks among figures who stands a living legend even after having entered eternal life.[citation needed] He was son of Maulana Abdul Aziz, managing Proprietor of famous old news paper "Paisa Akhbaar", and nephew of Maulana Mahboob Alam, who was editor of this newspaper. He passed middle standard examination from Diyal Singh College and secured a diploma in Arts from the Mayo School of Arts [Now National College of Arts (NCA)]. Mr. Abdul Rehman Chughtai, a renowned artist, was one of his tutors at this time. He died on December 31, 1970 and Government of Pakistan honoured him with The order of the Excellence for his services. He had three daughters, who all died by the year 2008.

Mualana Hifzur Rehman, the Paisa Akhbari, has been granted the "Sitara-i-Imtiaz" (The Order of Excellence) from the Government of Pakistan for his services in the field of Archaeology, history and linguistic research.

He donated musical instruments, ancient jewellery, textiles, pottery and armory, relics from the Graeco-Bactrian times, as well as objects of Greco-Buddhist sculptures, Mughal and Pahari paintings to Lahore Museum in 1964. He was curator of many museums of subcontinent and expert of Gormukhai and Sanskrit languages. He also compiled first Urdu Encyclopedia of 11 volumes

Services And Achievements

During the 2nd decade after partition of sub continent, Maulana Hifz-ur-Rehman offered invaluable collections on antiquities as donations to the Lahore Museum under his devotion to nation. This precious collection, which was gathered through his life long struggle and by spending considerable expense includes the rare manuscripts including 3 Quranic manuscripts written by Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS), decrees, Chinese Porcelain, Coins, Glass Objects, Miniatures, Ivory Object, specimen of calligraphy and Islamic Arts. These antiquities number one thousand and five hundred in all. This bulk of antiquities from Maulana Sahib is a very valuable addition to the collection of Lahore Museum.

The Second notable achievement on the part of Maulana (late) is the compilation of Urdu Encyclopedia (Hifz-ul-uloom) which comprises 250 volumes. The composition and compilation of this venture involved extra ordinary labour and efforts in addiction to expense. needless to say, that the venture on his part is great deal for Urdu language.
