Matt's career began in the theatre, with his first role in the Sydney based PACT Centre for Emerging Artists production Madagaskar Lily.[1] He then moved onto the Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP) where he developed a passion for Shakespeare. He played the role of Banquo in Macbeth, and Ulysees in Troilus and Cressida. Matt was soon awarded a scholarship by the ATYP for his outstanding work and chose to travel to New York.[2]

Early career
On moving to New York from Australia in 1999, Matt studied with the Atlantic Theater Company (a school started by David Mamet and William H. Macy).[3] With renewed skills and vigour Matt returned to the ATYP for their commissioned work with Nick Enright, called Spurboard. This play was performed in conjunction with the Sydney Theatre Company and went on to tour country New South Wales.[4]
Keen to expand his horizons Matt travelled to Oxford, England, to study with the British American Drama Academy. There he furthered his skills with Shakespeare under the guidance of teachers such as John Barton (director), Jane Lapotaire and Alan Rickman.
Upon returning to Australia, Matt continued work in theatre, including roles in productions such as "Rebel Tour", a fictionalised account of the South African rebel tours[5] and "Prisoner of Love".[6] Matt also began to focus his talents on film and television.
Television & Film
Matt has appeared in many Australian dramas including guest roles on Rush (2008 TV series), City Homicide, The Strip (Australian TV series), Blackjack, Stingers, All Saints (TV series) and Home and Away. He has played semi regular roles in Satisfaction (TV series) (as Dougie), and in Carla Cametti PD where he was the hired hit man Sean Hamley.[7]
Matt has also had a number of roles in American productions. They include Knowing (film) (with Nicolas Cage), The Pacific (miniseries) (with James Badge Dale) and Invincible (2001 TV film) (with Billy Zane).[8]
Matt has just finished filming in the upcoming 13-part Australian television mini-series Underbelly: Razor, in which he portrays notorious psychopath and standover man John "Snowy" Cutmore.[9] The highly anticipated Underbelly: Razor is due to screen on Australian television in mid-August 2011 and Matt's performance has already been critically acclaimed as "spot on"[10]
In the September 2011 edition of FHM, Matt appears as the joker from The Dark Knight (film) in a fashion shoot with a difference - where cast members of Underbelly: Razor were asked to channel their inner screen killer.[11]
