Sydney Theatre Company

Sydney Theatre Company

The Sydney Theatre Company (STC) is one of Australia's most well-known and notable theatre companies operating from The Wharf Theatre near The Rocks area of Sydney, as well as the Sydney Theatre and the Sydney Opera House.

The Sydney Theatre Company was formed by a grant from the New South Wales State Government in 1979, with Richard Wherrett as artistic director and productions followed the year after.

The Wharf Theatre opened in 1984 and has produced notable international and local plays, such as works by David Williamson.

Many Australian actors who would later find wider success both locally and internationally such as Hugo Weaving, Cate Blanchett and Geoffrey Rush have grounded their careers in Sydney Theatre Company productions.

Old Tote Theatre Company

NIDA considers that its standing company, the Old Tote Theatre Company (1963-1978), was the precursor to the Sydney Theatre Company.

Artistic Directors

Wayne Harrison became artistic director in 1990, followed by Robyn Nevin A.M. in 1999, who will hand over to Cate Blanchett and her husband, playwright Andrew Upton for the 2008 season. Prominent directors working regularly for STC include Gale Edwards, Barrie Kosky, David Berthold, Neil Armfield and Benedict Andrews.
