Mattie Lietz

Mathilda (Mattie) Lietz was a Midwestern painter. Lietz was born in Peoria, Illinois on July 21, 1893(1893-07-21) and died on January 15, 1956(1956-01-15) (aged 62) in Grand Detour, Illinois.

Early career

Lietz spent most of her career living in Peoria, Illinois where she worked as a painter and educator. She studied at Butler University in Irvington, Indiana and later attended The Art Institute of Chicago where she studied with Oberteuffer, John Thomas Nolf, George Elmer Browne, Frederick Milton Grant, and Henrik Asor Hansen.

Her primary notoriety came from the work she did as a regional Midwestern landscape water-colorist, but she did produce a sizable number of still life and figurative oil on canvas.
