History
Materdomini's name, a Latin word meaning Mother of God, derives from an ancient chapel dedicated to Santa Maria Materdomini, first mentioned in 1500. On October 16, 1755 it died in this chapel Gerard Majella (originary of Muro Lucano), buried there and canonized in 1904. Mainly due to this reason, during the first half of 20th century, it grew a village in the neighborhoods of the Basilica of San Gerardo Maiella, one of the most important and receptive Catholic sanctuaries [2] of Campania and surrounding areas.
Geography
The town is located in the valley where is located the spring of the Sele river (in Caposele) and close to the Picentini mountain range. It is 2 km far from Caposele, 5 from Teora, 7 from Lioni, 9 from Laviano (in the Province of Salerno) and the exit "Caposele" of the rapid road Lioni-Contursi serves Materdomini directly.
