Massimiliano Esposito (born 27 May 1972 in Naples, Italy) is an Italian footballer (midfielder).

Career

Albeit born in Naples, Esposito started his professional career in Catanzaro, where he was a promising midfielder in the early 1990s. When Reggiana was promoted to Serie A in 1993, they signed Esposito as its playmaker. During his two years in Reggio Emilia, Esposito was one of the clubs' key players, but had to spend the second of those years in Serie B, since Reggiana were relegated in 1994.

In the summer of 1995, one of the Italian giants of the time, Lazio, bought Esposito. He spent one year at the Roman club, but could not earn himself a regular starting XI spot, much because he was up against players such as Aron Winter and Roberto Di Matteo for the first time in his career. Therefore he was sold to his hometown club Napoli, where he performed decently during the 1996-97 season, before unexpectedly being sold to Hellas Verona in the midst of the league campaign. Following his time in Serie B with Verona, Napoli bought him back when it was relegated in 1998. Esposito's second foray at Napoli did not result in promotion, and he left for Perugia at the end of the season. In the three coming years, Esposito spent his last years in Serie A as a player, with Brescia and Chievo the clubs following Perugia. He played about 140 matches in the top domestic division, before rounding off his career in several Serie B and amateur clubs.

Following his Esposito's retirement from professional football, he became a stalwart in the Italian beach soccer national team.
