Mary Burce Warlick is a United States diplomat. She currently serves as the United States Ambassador to Serbia.

Early life

Warlick was born in 1956 to a Lutheran missionary family of Willard and Elinor in Papua New Guinea. She spent her high school years in Adelaide, South Australia. Warlick graduated from Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana with Bachelor's degree in Political Science and Humanities in 1979, and from Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University with Master’s degree in International Relations. in 1982.[1][2]

Political career

Warlick joined foreign service at the U.S. State Department in 1983. She held positions at U.S. embassies in Manila, Dhaka and Bonn. From 1983 through 1985, she served as Consular Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Philippines; from 1985 to 1986 as Staff Assistant to the Director of Foreign Service Institute; from 1986 to 1988, as Economic Officer in U.S. Embassy in Bangladesh; and then from 1988-1990, as Economic Officer at the embassy in Manila again. Once she returned to the states, Warlick worked as an Economic Officer at Office of Textile Negotiations from 1990 to 1992 and then as Sr. Watch Officer at Operations Center of the State Department from 1992 through 1994. From 1994 to 1998, she served as Economic Officer and Global Affairs Counselor in Bonn, Germany. In 1998-2000, she was the Director of the Office for Ukraine, Moldova and Belarus Affairs.

In August 2001, she was assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, Russia. Warlick worked as Minister Counselor for Economic Affairs until July 2004. She tavelled throughout Russia working on many issues including trade, investment, energy and Russian potential accession to World Trade Organization. Upon her return to the United States, she was appointed Director of the Office of Russian Affairs at the State Department. She held the position until August 2007, when she was appointed Special Assistant to President George W. Bush and Sr. Director for Russia at National Security Council. In 2008, Warlick left National Security Council, transferring to U.S. Department of Defense, where she worked as the Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for European and NATO Policy and Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia Policy. She left Department of Defense in May 2009.[1]

On September 24, 2009, she was appointed U.S. Ambassador to Serbia by President Obama.[3] On December 24, 2009 Warlick's appointment to Belgrade was confirmed by the Senate. She's married to James B. Warlick, Jr. who was also confirmed as the United States Ambassador to Bulgaria on the same day.[1]

Awards

In 2006, Warlick received the Secretary of State’s Award for Public Outreach.[2]

She is fluent in Russian and German. The Warlicks have three children, Jamie, Jason and Jordan.[1]
