Washington, D.C.Date March 4, 1837 The inauguration of Martin Van Buren as the eighth President of the United States took place on Saturday, March 4, 1837. The inauguration marked the commencement of the only four-year term of Martin Van Buren as President and Richard Mentor Johnson as Vice President. Van Buren was sworn in as President by Chief Justice Roger Taney on March 4, a sunny and cold day. For the first time in inaugural history, the outgoing and new Presidents rode together to the Capitol.[1]
