History
The company started in the year 1992 when Rakesh and Rashmi Verma. However, this proved to be very daunting task, considering the size and the ever changing landscape of the country. Through the first decade of MapmyIndia, it created the raw map data serving clients in telecom and FMCG sectors - towards tower planning, sales and distribution mapping etc. This exercise created one of the largest digital maps for India.
As pioneers in this space, the founders, wanted people to have access to the geo-spatial data available with the company and hence in the winter of 2004, they launched a free maps and direction portal. In 2007, they launched a navigation device - with All India Maps. General Motors becomes the 1st automotive company in India to launch MapmyIndia navigation products. Since then, the company has set up a large dealer and service network across the country for devices and works with automotive companies to provide maps for in-dash navigation solutions.
In 2010, MapmyIndia launched a vehicle tracking solution whereby one can track vehicles, children or any other assets in real time. Also, they launched detailed print map books and travel guides for various states along with a title called the National Motoring Atlas, which serves as a guide for travelling enthusiasts within the country.
MapmyIndia provides map data and related navigation technologies for over 600 companies clients such as Coca-Cola, Yahoo! Maps India, Samsung, Dell India, Motorola, Ford India, GM, Mitsubishi etc.
Tracking Services
MapmyIndia provides enterprises API and solutions whereby one can track vehicles, children or any other assets. The concept of tracking is a new phenomenon; as previously such technologies were not readily available. It works on the principle of reverse geocoding i.e. as the vehicle is passing via an area, and the latitude and longitude are known, the name of the area can be made to appear on the screen. Pan India maps covering thousands of cities and millions of kilometers of road network with millions of points of interest. Available as part of in-dash navigation units or mobile phones with GPS units. These maps are also licensed to various navigation devices, phones, cars, softwar e platforms. Apart from its own standard portable navigation device (PND) offerings, MapmyIndia also provides customized portable device product solutions to car manufacturers which are used as standard bundled offerings for specific car models and genuine accessory/ recommended accessory. Hence, now the company has a wide array of global partnerships with car and car systems OEMs, navigation engine providers, system integrators that enables it to provide customized and turnkey solutions.
Location Maps (LBS maps)
Designed for location based services on telecom network platform. such as a friend finder, or a bar/restaurant finder etc. These LBS maps work on various telecom applications that can run on various wireless carriers in 2G, 2.5G, 3G, LT, CDMA, EVDO environments on a variety of phone platforms such as Symbian, Nucleus OS, Blackberry OS, Apple OS, Android, RTOS (Real Time Operating System) etc. This service is traditionally used by businesses such as banks, travel companies, real estate portals with multiple outlets spread out across the country. They use it in form of a store locator which allows their customers to search for an outlet nearest to their location and get driving directions to it.
Web APIs
MapmyIndia location APIs allow software developers to program and incorporate MapmyIndia maps and search functionality without the handling raw vector map data and GIS infrastructure. Businesses/developers can leverage these APIs to integrate interactive, zoom, drag map mash-ups, generate and display dynamic driving directions, and execute local searches on MapmyIndia's map data
Other Services
Geo Coding - This is a custom service that MapmyIndia executes for its clients whereby it is able to map enable (show on map), a particular address. This process is known as Geo-coding. Geo-coding is useful in areas such as plotting of customers near a store, address of insurance holders with relevance to a branch outlet, the number of addresses in a particular locality etc.
Large scale mapping projects - These are custom project for large businesses or the government agencies where by a complete city is mapped out to obtain various attributes such as - Number of household per municipal wards - Buildings with a height definition greater than 30 metres - All electrical utility lines for a given city - Telecom network and its connectivity for a city / rural - OFC / Network fibre mapping
Every Dealer Surveys (EDS) - Every dealer survey is the census of each outlet that sells a particular category of product. The categories could be as diverse as carbonated drink, biscuits or even mobile SIM cards. A typical survey will encompass a sweep of a city while recording the following information: Outlet name, proprietor name, address, GPS coordinates, type of shop, type of locality, whether category stocked, what brands in the category are stocked, presence and detail of SGAs etc.
Field Surveys - MapmyIndia has considerable expertise in conducting large scale surveys to collect geographical and demographic information. MapmyIndia utilizes this capability to conduct customized surveys for enterprises. These are specific to task at hand. An example is a census of tobacco outlets within a city with a complete detail of location, GPS coordinates, branding, products stocked, presence of sales generating assets (coolers, display cases etc.). Another example is marking the location of all fuel pumps within a city along with the GPS coordinates and approximate daily sales across the types of fuel dispensed.
