Ranibennur is a town and a city municipal council in Haveri district in the Indian state of Karnataka. It is situated about 300 km north west of Bangalore, the capital of Karnataka.

History

Popularly known as the "Gateway to North Karnataka", The name of the city is derived from the term "Rani-bennuru", literally meaning Queen's resting place. From the late 17th century onwards, the city was a part of the Regency of Bombay until the independence of India in 1947, when Bombay merged into the Republic of India.

Ranibennur is a taluk famous for its rich commodity market. Commodities like cotton yarn, cotton seed, oil seeds, red chilli, betel nut and betel leaf are openly traded on the burgeoning local market.

Rivers

One of Karnataka's most important river - Tungabhadra - flows along the border of Ranibennur taluk in the south. This river is getting polluted by industries.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census, [GR|India] Ranibennur had a population of 89,594. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Ranibennur has an average literacy rate of 70%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 75%, and female literacy is 64%. In Ranibennur, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Economy

Agriculture

Bulk of the population is engaged in agriculture and related activities. Cotton and jowar (sorghum) are very well suited for the semi-arid climate. Coconut, brinjal, maize, betel leaves and tomatoes are the other crops grown here. Much of the agricultural output is dependent on the southwest monsoon and hence gets challenging at times. ericulture

Sericulture (rearing of silkworms) is growing in popularity among the farmers. Mulbery plants are grown and silkworm larvae are fed cut-up mulberry leaves. This is a labour intensive activity and hence well suited to this region.

Business

Cuisine

"Jolada rotti with badnekai yengai" (sorghum bread with brinjal curry) is the favourite of the people of this region. Other specialities include "biranji anna","mirchi(stuffed chilli) and mandakki".

Ranibennur is home to various religions including sub castes of Hindus, Muslims, Jains, Christians, Buddhists etc.

The famous temple in Ranibennur is "Basavanna Temple" which is located in Doddapete. Also two old forts are there in Ranibennur that are 150 years of old.

Transportation

Ranibennur is well connected by road and rail. National Highway #4 that connects Bangalore to Pune passes through Ranebennur. NWKRTC (North West Karnataka Road Transport Corporation) and KSRTC (Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation) have excellent bus services to every corner of Karnataka. Many private buses pass through Ranibennur for overnight travel to Bangalore, Mysore, Mangalore and Mumbai. Several trains pass through Ranibennur Railway Station everyday giving daily connections to Bangalore, Hubli and faraway places like Mumbai, Chennai, and cities in Gujarat and Rajasthan. Nearest airport is Hubli where Air Deccan and Kingfisher Airlines provide daily flights to Belgaum, Bangalore and Mumbai.

Wildlife

The Ranibennur Blackbuck Sanctuary (119 km²) was declared as a sanctuary mainly to protect blackbucks. It comprises two unconnected portions, an eastern and a western bit. The sanctuary has a core zone of 14.87 km² and a buffer-cum tourism zone of 104.13 km². The area is covered mainly by scrub forest and Eucalyptus plantations, and is also inhabited by the highly endangered Great Indian Bustard and the wolf. However, the Great Indian Bustard has not been sighted in the sanctury since around 2002 and may be locally extinct. Blackbuck are pleantiful with a count of more than 6000 in the 2005 census. Agricultural fields surround the sanctuary.One of the most populr animal in the world called "Krishnamruga" is available to see in this Sanctuary only.The best time to visit is between October and March for observing the blackbuck, while the bustard is most easily sighted from February to June.
