Aliran Manyang is a style of pencak silat based on open-hand strikes. It was created by the royal family of Madura in the town of Sumberpucung located in East Java, Indonesia.[1] It was named after the rapidity of hornets' movements and their sting,[1] which formed the basis of the Manyang style's speed, accuracy and evasive maneouvres.
Manyang’s primary emphasis is on open-hand strikes using the principle that open hand techniques, if applied correctly, can inflict a force as great as a closed fist with the specific advantage of quickly using the hand to grab the opponent.[2] Meticulous attention is paid to the forms which, once perfected, lead to weapons-training.
The Manyang style in Europe and the United States combines four primary concepts:[1]
- Seni (art) is the aesthetic aspect found in the forms.
- Bela diri (self-defense) is the staged, choreographed sequences of attack and defense amongst two opponents.
- Tanding (competition) is sparring, often in a tournament environment.
- Kebatinan is the spiritual and mental aspect of the art. Its main focus is harmony within oneself.

Kepala Guru Pelatih (Head Instructor) Sir Clark Donald Kessing started his formal training in pencak silat in 1954 after meeting Raden Panji Setiyo Warsomo (Guru Besar Cipto) and Raden Panji Banbang Setiyo Suprapto (Maha Guru Nelson) both from the Royal Setiyo bloodline and his weapons teacher Grandmaster Paul de Thouars. To this day, Grand Master Sir Kessing is the only non-Indonesian that was adopted in to the Royal Setiyo Family, thus making him the only heir to the Manyang style. The Manyang Academy was founded and established on April 5, 1978 in Krommenie City, Netherlands.[3]
He was one of the co-founders of the Indonesian Pencak Silat Organization in Netherlands and was the commissioner of sports affairs within that organization for 10 years responsible for the Dutch Youth and Juniors Sparring and Forms tournaments. It was also in this same period that, Sir Kessing and Bapak Jarnuarno started up the first Referee courses in the Netherlands. He also co-founded the Belgian Pencak Silat Organization, the European Pencak Silat Organization and the (NAPSI) the Dutch association with the Indonesian Organization.
Grand Master Sir Donald Kessing was an essential member of the TKP4N[4] team (Team Kerja Pembentukan Persatuan Perguruan Pencak Silat Nederland) responsible for founding the Nederlandse Pencak Silat Bond, NPSB (Dutch Pentjak Silat Organization). The NPSB is the only pencak silat organization recognized by PERSILAT and the Federation of Eastern Martial Arts as a member of the Dutch Sports Federation. Mr. Eddie. H. Nalapraya and Mr. Rustadi H. Effendi presented the official documents for the inception of this organization in the Atlantic building in Krommenie city, Netherlands.
On April 4, 1998, while celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Manyang style, Guru Donald Kessing was knighted by order of her Majesty Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands Beatrix of the Netherlands and witnessed by Mr. Brakel representing the Federation of Eastern Martial Arts.[5] making his title: Sir, Clark Donald Kessing.
On June 12, 2004 Grand Master Don Kessing received the “Menurut Adat Keluarga” (the absolute highest ranking in the family style) from Prince Panji Bambang Setiyo Suprapto / Grandmaster David Nelson currently living in the Netherlands. Guru Pelatih Donald is now Kepala Guru Pelatih (Head Instructor).[4]
Grand Master Donald Kessing still maintains all of his contacts with the PERSILAT hierarchy as well as his contacts throughout Europe and in the USA.

Music
The Manyang style, as all of the traditional pencak silat styles, can serve as a socio-cultural activity[6] wherein the movements are sequenced routines performed by two opponents. Once these opponents start sharing the same preceptual fight scene their movements start to resemble both art and theater. The Manyang style can be accompanied by gamelan and/or kendang pencak music either during practice or performance
The following videoes is a small sample of the gamelan music.[1][2]Weapons
The most common weapons used are blades, sticks, staves and rods which can be composed of either bamboo, wood or steel.[7]
- Golok: Short Sword
- Trisula: Trident
- Linso: Handkerchief
- Pecut: Whipping rope
- Arit: Jagged Full Mooned shaped Sickle
- Celurit id:Celurit: Smoothed Half Mooned shaped Sickle[8]
