Mantova railway station (Italy)

Mantova railway station, or Mantua railway station (Italian: Stazione di Mantova), serves the city and comune of Mantua, in the region of Lombardy, northern Italy. Opened in 1873, it forms part of the Verona–Mantua–Modena railway, and is a terminus of two secondary railways, linking Mantua with Cremona and Monselice, respectively.

Until 1967, the station was also a terminus of the Mantua–Peschiera del Garda railway.

The station is currently managed by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI). However, the commercial area of the passenger building is managed by Centostazioni. Train services are operated by Trenitalia. Each of these companies is a subsidiary of Ferrovie dello Stato (FS), Italy's state-owned rail company.

Location

Mantova railway station is situated at Piazza Don Leone, a short distance to the west of the city centre.

History

The station was opened on 21 June 1873, upon the inauguration of the St. Antonio Mantovano–Borgoforte section of the Verona–Mantua–Modena railway.[1]

Features

The passenger building has two storeys. At ground level, there are a ticket office, waiting room, and the office of the traffic control department. The first floor is reserved for Trenitalia.

The station yard has nine through tracks, plus one terminating track, for use by passenger services. The tracks are served by five platforms although only three are connected by a subway. Of the through tracks, four (nos 6, 7, 8 and 9) are used only for non stopping traffic and/or for freight trains. The latter will soon be relocated to Mantova Frassino and the new connection with Valdaro.

The station has a still functioning goods yard with several sidings. Also in the station yard are a locomotive shed and workshops for the maintenance of trains, both of them now decommissioned.

Passenger and train movements

The station has about 2.8 million passenger movements each year.[2]

All passenger trains passing through the station stop there, including the InterCity Adige (Bolzano–Lecce). Other trains either originate or terminate there.

The most important destinations are Monselice, Rovigo, Verona Porta Nuova, Modena, Milano Centrale, Codogno and Cremona.

Interchange

Outside the station there are stops for APAM urban and suburban bus lines. The destinations of the suburban lines are Fagnano, Canicossa, Montichiari / Brescia, Sermide and Suzzara / Moglia.
