Manikpur (Assamese: মাণিকপুৰ) is a small town and a gaon panchayat in Bongaigaon district in the Indian state of Assam. Manikpur is 24.7 km far from its district main city Bongaigaon . It is 155 km far from its state capital Dispur .There are 12 gaon panchayat [1] under Manikpur Block.

History

Govinda Bhawan Geeta Sattra, Manikpur

Manikpur is famous for its rich culture and religious unity. The Govinda Bhawan Geeta Sattra(Xatra) is one of the center of Hindu worshipers, situated in the heart of Manikpur. From the chequered historical background of Manikpur, it can easily be surmised that the entire area was ruled by Koch-Rajbongshies belonging to Indo-Mongoloid ethnic group of peoples right from 15th century to the end of princely states in 1956 A.D.

Demography

The majority of the population is dominated by Assamesse and Bodos followed by Bengalis.

Festivals

There are several important traditional festivals celebrated in Manikpur. Mukoli Bihu is the most important and commonly celebrated festival. Laxmi puja is another festival celebrated with great enthusiasm. Muslims celebrate two Eids (Eid ul-Fitr and Eid al-Adha) with much eagerness.

Education

The number of schools kept rising after the private schools start functioning. Although, there are a good number of schools, but those providing higher secondary education are few.

Transportation

Manikpur is well connected by bus and train with all the surrounding areas. The National Highway 31[2] connects Manikpur with the rest of India. The nearest railway station is Patiladoha.

Manikpur is part of Abhayapuri North (Assembly constituency).[3]
