The territory covered by the present district of Gonda formed part of the ancient kingdom of Kosala . After the death of Rama, the celebrated sovereign of the Solar line of kings who ruled the kingdom of Kosala, it was divided into two portion the northern and southern - river Ghaghara forming the boundary between the two. Gonda falls in the northern part with Ghaghara bordering the district's entire southern boundary.The main occupation of the people in the district is farming. Agricultural produce include wheat, paddy, different pulses, oilseeds and sugarcane. Mango and Guava orchards can also be found in abundance. Through the district, pass the holy rivers Saryu and Ghaghra. There are many religious places in the district and the district headquarter itself is very close (60 km) to holy city Ayodhya, the birth place of Lord Rama. It is birth place of great poet

The Gonda is also home town of Dr. Farhan Pasha who was scientist in Korea and now in France.

metre s (393 feet).It has also played a great part in the Indian struggle for independence. Many people from this region have laid their lives to the service of nation, many leading operations during freedom struggle were executed from this land. Freedom Fighters like Sh. Chandra Shekhar Azad and his freinds had taken shelter and been working from there. One of our greatest freedom fighters Sh. Rajedra Lahiri was incarcerated and hanged in the Gonda Jail.
The "Putrayeshti yajna" that was performed by the King Dasharatha for the birth of Lord Rama and his three brothers was performed in this region. According to the legend in the region here was the "goshala" (cow-shelter) of the King Dasharatha and it has derived its name from that.
One of the India's six Indian Telephone Industries is situated at Mankapur, about 30 K.M. from District headquarter of Gonda. It is the most flourishing ITI of India. Gonda has been the place of early education of one of the India's President Mr. Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed. The school he studied in has been named after him.
